Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis is a strategy HIV negative people use to reduce their risk of becoming HIV positive. Please see the below link for more information sheet about PrEP created by the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
In British Columbia, PrEP is available through the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS PrEP Program at no cost to patients if they are part of certain at-risk populations, including Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), injection drug users, and individuals in a relationship with individuals with untreated HIV.
On Vancouver Island, individuals who qualify for the PrEP Program must be referred by a doctor, who then also receives and dispenses the PrEP medication directly to the patient. There are multiple organizational barriers involved in this that many clinics are not equipped to manage. To alleviate this, practitioners may refer patients to the PrEP clinic for PrEP consultation, initiation, management, and maintenance.
